Iran marks the centenary of American composer John Cage’s birth by a series of performing arts programs at the East Art Gallery in the capital city of Tehran.
John Cage Is Happening has been arranged by a group of Iranian artists, including: Makan Ashkvari, Shahrzad Beheshtian, Shadab Shayegan, Saeed Harati, Yalda Pakzad, Ehsan Mohammadzadeh, Nooshin Zamani, Puya Ehsaii, Sarah Feli, Tara Fatehi Irani, Nader Mashayekhi, Bahar Maghbooli, Rahele Taabodi, Davoud Zare, Mohammad Abbasi, Ali Moini, Shadi Afshar and Amir Raad.
The show which has been organized by Amir Raad and Puya Ehsaii, is composed of 12 performances, inspired by Cage’s greatest musical theater Song Books.
Composer, music theorist and writer, John Milton Cage was one of the pioneers of indeterminacy in music and a leading figure among post-war avant-garde artists.
The first performance of the series was staged by Hamid Pourazari on June 30, 2012, and the last one will be performed by Reza Servati on July 30.
According to organizers of the project, some performances are based on a single composition from the book, some are based on a collection of them and some are inspired by concepts derived from the book as a whole.
Song Books is a collection of short works composed and compiled by John Cage in 1970. It contains songs, songs with electronics, directions for a theatrical performance, and directions for a theatrical performance with electronics.
